Did you know that the global food system kills one trillion aquatic animals each year? Conservative estimates suggest that this ‘blue loss’ is 17 times higher than the total number of terrestrial, farmed animals. Despite this, animal advocates have spent very little time on aquatic animal welfare and industry standards are woefully low.

At the Aquatic Life Institute, we believe it is unacceptable to have a food system that tolerates needless suffering, when high-quality research shows that basic initiatives and interventions produce far better outcomes for humans, animals and climate.

What We Do

Our theory of change is simple:

  • We fund cutting-edge research into aquatic animal welfare, as well as analysing the existing body of research.
  • We use that research to build consensus and shared objectives amongst our coalition of global leaders in aquatic conservation and animal advocacy.
  • We and our coalition partners speak with a unified voice to apply pressure to industry and government leaders.

Guided by the principles of effective altruism, we aim to create the greatest reduction in suffering using the resources we have available. We have no ideological tilt toward particular ideas or ways of doing things, but instead remain open to innovative approaches and left field thinking.

Why we do it

We are at a pivotal point in aquatic animal welfare, with industry and government leaders responding to growing consumer pressure by beginning to devise more comprehensive aquatic animal welfare standards. For the first time, they are defining what it means to be a “higher-welfare fish” for the global market.

The first generation of these standards for terrestrial animal welfare were extremely weak and meant an uphill battle for animal advocates. At this crucial moment, there is a significant risk that the industry will set a low bar, creating a similar battle for aquatic animal advocates.

There is a huge opportunity to set aquatic animal welfare requirements at a higher level, putting the aquatic welfare movement on a much higher-impact trajectory.

What We’re Looking For

As we build on our recent successes, we are looking for a talented Managing Director who can help us build a robust, sustainable organisation which will allow us to shore up our gains to date and capitalise on the increasing number of growth opportunities coming our way.

This is a new role and represents an investment in the charity’s future. We are looking for someone who can work closely with the board and President to devise and implement business plans that are robust enough to accommodate our rapid growth and flexible enough to take advantage of new opportunities.

We don’t believe in prescriptive person specifications, as they limit the diversity of experience on our teams. If you have experience in the following broad areas, we would be keen to speak with you:

  • Leadership experience at departmental or organisation level.
  • Experience leading a rapidly growing team, department or organisation.
  • Experience managing both business operations and strategic programming.

What We Can Offer

  • You will be working with people who are experts in their field, developing innovative solutions to pressing but tractable issues.
  • You’ll be respected for your expertise and have the freedom to develop business plans that you feel are most effective.
  • We are a grown-up organisation and can provide an inclusive, flexible working environment.
  • We have an enviable network of partners and donors, which has opened a lot of doors for us to expand our suite of programmes and to deepen the reach and impact of our existing ones. We will be looking for you to help us in developing these opportunities.
  • We might be a lean team, but we’re genuinely global and so is our network of partners. You can help us achieve rapid impact at a global scale.

If you think that you’re the person to help us write the next chapter in our story, we would love to hear from you.
